Revise before Evaluation II

The II Evaluation test will be on December 11. Russian subgroups will be joined to write the test at 12:55- 14: 15. In order to write it successfully you need to revise:
  • 1) Advantages and Disadvantages of Video Resumes
  • 2) How to deliver a Public Speech: what standards should be followed; how to outline a speech, what to begin and end with.
  • 3) Usage of body language and visual aids in Public Speaking.
  • 4) Communication in teams and groups.
  • 5) Types of questions and questioning techniques.
  • 6) Stage Fright: how it is manifested, when and why it occurs.

Before the Exam

The examination for communication techniques is planned for January 15th, 2013 at 10:00. It will be in oral form. The list of topics and notions to define can be found here.
In order to be admited for the exam, you have to present the following:
  • Student’s Portfolio;
  • Online tasks, blog posts;
  • Video CV;
  • 2 evaluation tests;
  • In-class project presentation = individual work;
  • Public speech.

PORTFOLIO is due on December 4th, 2012. IT SHOULD BE HOUSED IN A FOLDER OR PLASTIC DISPLAY CASE AND CONTAIN:

1)       Title Page: included at the front of the of the Portfolio, with title “My Portfolio”, first and last name, the course name, date, instructor’s name and institution.

2)       Reflection Paper: 1-2 pages. Discusses the following: “Challenges I have faced in this course and how I have overcome them. How my speaking skills in English have improved since the beginning of this course; what I have learnt in this course that I will apply in the future.”
3)       Materials:
·         Text “Soft Sell” Character analysis graphics;
·         Grammar exercises: gerunds and infinitives with translation;
·         Quizzes and tests done during the semester (body idioms and gerunds);
4)       Personal CV
5)    Reflection paper on the Video Resume
6)    Translation of Cover and Recommendation letter from the course pack 
7)    Handout for your individual project


The day when other teachers will assist our lesson and you will demonstrate your best Video Resumes and best Public Speeches will be December 11th at 14:20, room 24.
Therefore, Russian subgroup 206A will be united with 205A at 12:55-14:15 to write the evaluation test and present the debts in Room 42. And Romanian group, PLEASE, do not plan anything for this time and come for the 3rd session that day!

Descriptive Writing. task for 25.09.2012

Good writers use words that appeal to some or all the 5 senses to help describe the topic. Here is a list of senses and examples of what they can describe. Add examples of your own under example 2 before you proceed to picture description.
Below is the picture you need to describe (post your description in comments). When you are describing pictures, use these expressions to explain precisely what / who you are referring to.
The woman ... on the right / left / in the center of the picture; ... in the background / foreground ...
Remember you can also use might be / may be / could be for speculating as well as looks, looks as if/like, etc. Use the body language of the people in the picture to help you.

About the Course


Communication Techniques is a course designed for 2nd year students who major in English. The course teaches the students to communicate correctly in English in different daily situations, to be careful when speaking with people from different cultures, familiarizes them with the body language and its significance in communication as well as gives a glimpse of the language development and history of human communication. The course includes 30 class hours.
Goals:
  • Learn tips for effective communication, questioning techniques, appropriate ice-breakers and conversation starters;
  • Speak with ease and confidence;
  • Prepare and deliver a speech in public;
  • List channels of non-verbal communication and analyze their importance in different cultures;
  • Discover and use unlimited internet resources for language learning;
  • Prepare individual project and presentations;
  • Practice skills of online search; e-mail; power point, movie maker; YouTube;
  • Learn how to publish created media online;
Requirements:
To complete the course successfully students need to present the following tasks and projects:
  •   Student’s Portfolio;
  • Online tasks, blog posts;
  • Video CV;
  • 2 evaluation tests;
  • In-class project presentation;
  • Public speech.

Oral presentations:
Dates assigned for oral presentations will be strictly observed. Make-up presentations may be arranged ONLY for “excused” absences, such as those caused by illness or by participation in an approved university activity. (Written medical excuse or authorized documentation is required). Otherwise, penalty of minus 1 point will apply.
Class presentation:
See the syllabus for texts and required assignments that will be covered each class. You are expected to come to class prepared to be able to discuss and participate in class activity in an intelligent and insightful manner. Participation is extremely important.
Attendance:
Attendance is essential for this class. Students are allowed 2 unexcused absences. Excused absences include medical excuses, religious observances and participation in university events such as sports or performances. Students who do not care have nothing to do in this class.
Classroom etiquette:
Please be on time. Switch off your cell phone during class. Please pay attention and listen quietly while your fellow classmates or I am speaking or presenting. Respect is important!

Evaluation:
Students will receive a grade for the course that will make up 20% of their final grade. Evaluation tests will make up 20 %, Portfolio and video CV 20 %. They will pass an oral examination – theory and practice, examination grade will constitute 40% of their final grade.
