Good writers use words that appeal to some or all the 5 senses to help describe the topic. Here is a list of senses and examples of what they can describe. Add examples of your own under example 2 before you proceed to picture description.
Below is the picture you need to describe (post your description in comments). When you are describing pictures, use these expressions to explain precisely what / who you are referring to.
The woman ... on the right / left / in the center of the picture; ... in the background / foreground ...
Remember you can also use might be / may be / could be for speculating as well as looks, looks as if/like, etc. Use the body language of the people in the picture to help you.
In the background and foreground we can see that it was night, the street lamps were lighting the window's oposite the "Phillies" Restaurant. At this late hour, there were only 3 people inside the restaurant: 2 men in black suits are on the left and a woman in a red silk dress is on the right. An awkward silence took over the late night customers, only to be interrupted by ocasional questions the bartender asked. Both the woman and the man next to her which are in the center of the image are having coffee to drive away the fatigue. The man in the center of the image is smoking a cigarette having small talk with the bartender. The third man in the left sits quietly at the counter, oblivious to everything going on around him.
ReplyDeleteJane, use present tense!
DeleteDo you know any synonyms for the word - MAN? It's repeated every time in your last sentences and the beauty of your description disappears :-(
This sentence: Both the woman and the man next to her which are in the center of the image are having coffee to drive away the fatigue. - can be simplified, break it into 2! How about the construction it looks like ... it seems as if ... ???
Good Luck!
At this picture we can see the typical American pub named “Phillies”. The question is simple: what can we sight, taste, touch, hear, and smell in such places. So let’s start from the very beginning. When you enter in such kind of places what do you do? First of all you touch the door-handle and, pushing back the chair, sit to the bar counter. Young barkeeper comes to you and you order a cup of coffee or a glass of beer. While he serves you, you look upon the institution: people around, what they ordered, interior, menu and etc. Afterwards you drink your coffee and may spend some more time here.
ReplyDeleteAnd now let’s try to answer our main question. So, in the center of the picture we can sight the bar counter and a young barkeeper, a woman and gentleman on the left and one more gentleman on the right, a door to the toilet room in the left corner, stemware, a new shop across the street, passers-by and etc. We also can taste some dishes and drinks here. You can touch a lot of things: from the door-handle to different utensil (glass, cup, flatware). You also can hear many noises like the doors opening, the other visitors talking, the radio music, the transport noise outside the pub. And if we speak about smacks we can smell a lot: from the other visitors perfume and coffee or beer aroma to the cigarette smell.
what can we sight --> what can we see? Sight is a noun! see is a verb!
DeleteAfter the verb ENTER never use ANY prepositions! While reading your description I never met the construction : it looks like ... it seems as if ...
It looks like your imagination began to wonder and you started imagining things and tried to introduce the reader inside that cafe - congratulations, you did it! But it is a little bit "out of topic/task"
The picture represent café “Phillies” placed on corner street. I think that café work non-stop. Because outside is dark, no people, no cars. In buildings which are nearby light is turn off. Probably has past midnight. I hear that in café plays nice relaxing music, may be it is smooth jazz. Smells tasty. Here is very comfortably. In café are 3 clients – couple and one man.
ReplyDeleteI think that couple is not so young. Woman is dressed in red dress and man is dressed in strict suit. They both have a cup of coffee. I have a feeling that they familiar very long time. I think that they discuss about something serious. May be they have some problems in their relationships. They are thoughtful. Their hands are very close, but they don’t hold hand.
About man. He is alone. He have a cup of coffee too. I think that he decided to walk and after came here. May be he doesn’t hurry up to go home. Because nobody is waiting for him – he is alone.
Waiter want to offer something for couple. I think that he wants to go home, because he is so tired, but try to work. Probably he hates his work, because he gets small salary and he should work day and night. I’m sure that he dreamt not about this life.
Mood of this picture thoughtful and sad, but at the same time surgeless, calm. I like this picture anyway, because it makes to be lost in thought.
Dear Nastya! You have very specific style of writing - reread your description - it is full of phrases, not complete sentences - you can join them and make a good sentence still keeping them short. Some verbs lack -s in the end - ts-ts-ts
Deleteand what kind of beginning is this: About man. ??? I never taught you this!
Although you description has grammar mistakes, you did a great job describing the characters. Your speculations about the man and woman is great and the description of the "waiter" is good. The thing that you mentioned the mood of the picture is also a plus for you! Have you ever thought of working in a museum giving tours? ;-) Keep working on your English, and I'm sure it will get better! You're making progress!
In a given picture I can see a usual American pub typical for the eighties. All around the pub seems to be asleep, because no man, no cars, no dogs or cats are there. May be it is already after midnight, because inside the pub there are only four persons, who look tired and drowsy as if they walked around the earth. In the foreground I see a lonely dark street, which probably after nine or ten hours will be crowded by noisy people and expensive cars. But now it is a tingling silence in the street. In the background I see previously mentioned pub and men inside it. The visitor on the left is well-dressed as if he is a businessman and he entered here after a long and difficult day at work to drink a bocal of beer to relax. The man and woman in the center look like a family couple which was walking down the street and visited the pub to take a coup of tee or coffee. The two men are dressed in black suits, with ties and hats; they seem to be real gentlemen. The woman is dressed in red elegant dress, and I’m sure, she feels like a young coquette. I can see one more man in the picture – the barkeeper. He is dressed in the uniform and he seems to be very tired, as though he worked the whole week non-stop. It smells good inside the pub, because various kinds of smell are here: the smell of women perfume, of coffee and of freshly baked cakes. Through the picture I can feel the silent of night and its pleasant atmosphere.
ReplyDeletesome grammar tips: In a= THE (we know what picture we're referring to) given picture I can see a = AN usual American pub typical for the eighties.
Deletebecause no man, - you mean people? then it should be mEn!
There is a place where you jump from the description of the background to foreground and then back to background - have you though about changing the place of some sentences to sound more organized?
a family couple which???? was walking down the street ...
Remember: new idea - new paragraph!
Congratulations: you used the construction - looks like ... as if ...
In this picture I see an evening image that shows an American pub( or bar). In the center of the picture I can a few people, who don't want to go home, and may be to stay for a drink.
ReplyDeleteOn the right I see a woman and a man, and they look like a couple. May be they just first met, and they decided to drink something together. The woman looks like a Heartbreaker. Becase she is dressed in a red dress(lady in red)and looks very attractive.Looking at men's clothes I can understand that this is 60-70 years. Is quiet, people sleep long ago .. and even a passersby you will not find.In the background all boutiques closed, nowhere is a light. I think I even can smell of freshly brewed coffee that these people drink. I think I can feel hardly heard melodies. And they sounds good. Para-pa-pa-para-pa-pa....
This picture evokes peace of mind and desire to be there, next to these people, and have a cup of coffee, chat with them about something interesting.
in spite of some errors, the description is rather good! There is logic between the sentences and the melody that sounds there makes me want to drink some coffee, too.
DeleteThank you so much, I'm really happy to hear such words.. This is my first good work(almost good work =))))
DeleteIn the foreground we can see a huge ‘’glass wall’’ behind which some people have a rest. In the background we observe a solitary street and only a flow of light made us to feel a little breezier. So, there is a cafe in this picture, but not a usual one. Every Friday the administrators of the cafe prepare a surprise for the last visitors. Entering in, here can be heard a smooth melody which is pleasant for all the guests after a long and tiring week. The man in a black velour suit on the right asked the barman to bring him a coffee. The woman near this man is thinking about what she'd like to drink, but when she felt a strong smell of coffee she suddenly asked the barmen for it. The man in a grey hat on the left of the bar table was sitting alone and drinking a glass of whiskey. All the visitors are relaxed, only the barman who is exhausted tries to look as if he just begins his work day. Two men and the woman were going to leave the cafe when the lights were switched off and on their bar table was brought a chocolate fondue fountain from which chocolate started to flow. Within this fountain were brought fruits and small fireworks which created a magic atmosphere. It looked like a fairy tale. The guests were amazed and decided to come next Friday again. This surprise gave to the guests the best experience.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the picture we can admire how people are resting in a bar. Through the windows we can observe that at a such late hour there are only 3 clients: a pretty woman wearing a red dress and 2 men dressed in black classic suits. It looks like they are flirting. They are served by a tired barman who wears a white uniform which looks as if it is a new one. According to their body's position they are calm, they rest, they are not hurrying. Maybe this calm atmosphere is caused by the amazing song they are listening. All of them are impressed by the good smell of natural coffee. In the background we can see the town in the night without people, without noise. It is a dark night and people remain in this darkness alone with their feeling, emotions, ideas and problems. It is a nostalgic picture for me because I am also alone having in front of me memories,loneleness...olea
DeleteThis picture give us the image of an American pub. It is out of town, or it's too late, because nothing can be seen near it: neither people nor cars. Only 3 people came to this pub at such an late hour: 2 men and one women. All of them are dressed in formal clothes.Men look like gentlemen. They wore black classic suits and grey smart hat. Woman wore a red silk dress which made her very attractive and graceful. They may be came back from the theater and decided to stop in the pub. The man and women stood close to each other and were discussing the performance, that they had seen. A man who stood apart is their old friend, who decided to be alone. They are served by a barman, dressed in light pure form. The atmosphere was very quiet and relaxing. Sounds of quiet classical music are heard. All of them smelt expensive perfume, but the smell of hot coffee prevails everywhere. Visitors were immersed in that atmosphere and no one hurried home. The only tired man was barman, because he works so hard.
DeleteThis picture makes me relax and think about something pleasant.
After the verb ENTER never use ANY prepositions!
Deletethis sentence: Every Friday the administrators of the cafe prepare a surprise for the last visitors. - has no logical connection with the sentences that you write after it. what is the surprise? and how can you see this in the picture?
You did the same thing as Marina Vasilic above - let your imagination fly and invented a completely new story! Don't dream, stick to reality! But Good job in giving a kind of introduction, details in the body and conclusion!
Olya, your description is really a good one! It is a pleasure to read it! Could you think of the title for the picture?
ReplyDeleteLiliana, what is your group? I have 3 Lilianas!!!
ReplyDelete- 2 men and one womAn
- use present tense! You have a mixture of tenses and it spoils your description.
- did you forget about the construction looks like ... as if ...?
grade - 7 (seven)
Looking at this picture I see that everything it is so quite. It’s a dark night where in the foreground we can see three clients - a beautiful woman wearing a red dress with brown hair and two men dressed in black suits and both with steel grey hat. There is also a barman who serves the people and looks as he is tired because works non-stop but does his work with a lot of kindness. We can see that the man and woman body’s position look like they are flirting or may be they are a couple...we don't know. There we can feel a pleasant smell of coffee and of course of lady's perfume which spreads in the local.I think that in the pub they are listening a calm music because their moves are done slowly.
ReplyDeleteIn the background we can see an empty street, nobody is walking. The whole street is covered with a great silence and you can only see and admire this picture.
looks as he is tired because works non-stop - something is missing in this phrase!
ReplyDeletethe man and woman body’s position - the apostrophe should be in a different position!
they are listening a calm music - Listen TO
At the given picture i see small caffe on the corner of the street, it is visible through the window that inside there are two men and a woman as a clients and one barman. The style of their dressing seem like from the 70th.Decoration and furniture are also old-fashioned. The street is empty and lightened, maybe it is late night. Colors are beautiful: dark green, orange and yellow. I think it is drawn by the painter as a painting, or maybe as a post card.
ReplyDeleteIn the Edwards Hooper’s painting we can see night eatery Phillies. Many factors pointing out that this cafe is night eatery for example we see that opposite store is closed and inside of the café there are few people and light is switched on and because the painting is called midnight. Looking at the people we see that everyone is thinking about something , barman doesn’t look at the client but through the window, a man and a woman are also lost in thought because their mouth are closed. It could be noticed by their clothes that on the painting there is a n American town of 40th. On the picture didn’t shown any door, maybe the painter wanted to show the loneliness of big town.
